Certificates of Merit

The International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS) bestows annually an international award of merit as a means to recognize the contribution of individuals to the development of Canadian Studies in Canada and abroad. In most instances, the awards recognize institutional and organizational work. The ICCS Certificates of Merit were established in 1988 and the first certificates awarded in 1989.

The award consists of a certificate, which is usually presented to the winner during an event held during the annual ICCS meetings if the recipient is able to attend. Unfortunately, the ICCS is not able to disburse for travel or accommodation, in order for the recipient to receive the Certificate of Merit. If the person cannot attend, the ICCS will send the certificate to the nominator and encourage him/her to identify an event organized by the national Canadian Studies Association ,which would be suitable for presenting the certificate.

Nominations may come from any ICCS member organization. Posthumous or self-nominations will not be considered. The selection of winners is made by the ICCS Executive Committee. All nominations are treated confidentially.

Nominations must include:

  • One-page nomination letter explaining the reasons for the nomination.
  • 200–250 word citation (which will be reproduced on the certificate).
  • One letter of recommendation by an individual other than the nominator.
  • One letter of support from a Member Association or of an Associate Member Association of the ICCS

The deadline to submit a nomination is 05 May 2025.

Nominations should be sent to: iccsciec[at]yorku.ca.
